When I first started throwing darts, I would ask to throw other players darts.  One thing I noticed is some threw some really light darts, and others would prefer heavy darts.

I personally prefer them on the heavier side, so if/when looking for a new set of darts I tend to stick around the same weight of my current darts (19 gram barrel only).

Darts are weighed in grams, but there are some gotchas.  Some companies when listing dart weight list the full setup weight, meaning the combined barrel, stem, flight, and tip.  Other companies just list the barrel weight.  So when shopping around make sure you’re comparing apples to apples, and look at the barrel weight alone.

They say knowledge is power, so get to know your current dart weight.  For this, I recommend picking up a scale.  I use the American Weigh Scales 100G X 0.01G Digital Scale, With Seaside 100 G Stainless Steel Calibration Weight.  At only around $15 USD, it’s not going to put a big dent in your wallet.

Specs:

  • Weighs up to 100 grams in 0.01 gram increments
  • Backlit LCD display helps make the numbers viewable and easy to read
  • Flip-open lid protects the delicate weighing surface and includes basic instructions
  • Backed by a powerful 10 year warranty, runs on 2 AAA batteries (included)
  • Easy recalibration with included 100g American Weigh calibration weight, ensuring accurate readings at all times

This scale works great, comes with a calibration weight, and has a .01g resolution.  The scale goes up to 100 grams, which is sufficient for weight darts.  I do recommend getting a calibration weight because you’ll need to calibrate from time to time.

Here’s how I’ve used the scale in my dart journey:

  • Weighing my barrels to know it’s weight.
  • Checking quality on a barrel set or barrel maker.  Does each barrel weigh the same?  I would consider it bad quality if each barrel in the set weighed differently.
  • How much does my full setup weigh?
  • How much does my flight, stem, or tip weigh?
  • How does an L-Style flight system weigh compared to a Fit Flight System
  • How does a steel tip conversion tip change my setup and weight.
  • Adding weight to existing barrels using tungsten putty.
